Soil temperature plays a vital role in the ability of grass to absorb nutrients. Applying spring fertilizer too early, before the temperature of the ground reaches 80° allows much of the fertilizer to travel past the root zone without ever being absorbed and utilized by the grass. It’s like dumping three quarters of the bag of fertilizer in the garbage before you ever put it on your lawn!

To ensure all of the fertilizer applied to the lawn is used by the grass, wait until May to fertilize your lawn. Waiting until late spring to apply fertilizer does not, in anyway hinder the growth of the lawn.
