If you’re wanting to control turf destroying insects, the only preventative treatment you can apply is for mole crickets in late May. All other turf pests must be treated if and when they become active in your lawn because any insecticides applied before hand will be washed away with rain or irrigation within days after they are applied and will be ineffective.
Mole crickets are active year round and have a one year life cycle. In May they have recently hatched and are more susceptible to insecticides. However, mole crickets do travel and just because you treat for them in May, doesn’t mean you won’t be bothered by them again, later in the year after the treatment has worn off.
